June 17,Kathmandu-A provisional order- to use the foreign employment welfare fund to send home Nepali workers living abroad has been issued by The Supreme Court to the government.
The order’s purpose is to bring back thousands of migrants living in a vulnerable situation in different parts of the world due to Covid-19 and are unable to return back home due to high fares of chattered planes and flights.
On Monday, Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Hari Prasad Phuyal issued the order and asked the government to rescue the Nepalis right away. They also mentioned, “It’s the responsibility of the government to rescue the stranded migrant workers and send them to their respective destinations when they arrive in Nepal. Nepalis go abroad to work not only for their personal economic gains; they also make huge contributions to the country’s economy.”
If we dig in to the reports by World Bank, you can see that $8.1 billion has been sent by Nepali migrant to their home in 2018 which makes it the 19th biggest beneficiary of funds sent by migrants around the world. The money remitted by migrant workers is equivalent to 28 percent of Nepal’s gross domestic product. And the money sent by migrant workers is equivalent to 28 percent of Nepal’s gross domestic product. So, yes they deserve a part in need.
